Software-Defined Radio (SDR) allows you to receive, visualize, and explore radio signals using software and affordable USB receivers. In this beginner-friendly workshop, you will discover how radio communication works and get practical experience exploring the radio spectrum.

We will start with a short theoretical introduction to radio and SDR, followed by hands-on activities using free software and low-cost SDR receivers. You will learn how to set up an SDR receiver, explore different frequencies, visualize signals, and experiment with real-world examples of wireless communication.

Some practical activities may include receiving amateur radio beacons from Samfundet, public broadcasts, monitoring amateur radio frequencies, and comparing different antennas.

No previous experience with radio, electronics, or programming is required — just bring your curiosity!

Event details

  • Date: Tuesday, November 10th
  • Time: 18:15 – 20:00

What will you not learn?

This workshop focuses exclusively on receiving and analyzing radio signals. Participants will not transmit radio signals or build transmitting equipment.

Transmitting on amateur radio frequencies requires an appropriate amateur radio licence and compliance with applicable regulations. If you’re interested in transmitting, ARK offers a licensing course each semester to help you prepare for the internationally recognised amateur radio licence.

What should you bring?

Please bring a laptop. If you would prefer to participate using an Android phone, bring a compatible USB OTG adapter as well. SDR receivers and software will be provided by ARK, we have capacity for 20 people without an SDR. You are welcome to bring your own compatible receiver, if you have one!

Whether you are interested in wireless technology, electronics, amateur radio, or simply curious about the radio spectrum, this workshop is a great place to start!
